Box Frames utilise spacers which create a 3 Dimensional Space in the picture frame.  This allows the framing of objects like sea glass, scrabble tiles, ceramics and even baby casts! Virtually any 3 dimensional object can be framed with a box frame. Box frames can also be used to frame prints and they give a sense of perspective to the print as it is recessed back from the glass.

Frequently Asked Questions About Box Frames

A box frame (also called a shadow box) is a deep picture frame with spacers that create a 3-dimensional space inside. This allows you to frame objects with depth such as medals, memorabilia, baby casts, sea glass, scrabble tiles, ceramics, dried flowers, sports jerseys, and other keepsakes. Box frames can also display flat prints with an elegant recessed floating effect.

We offer box frames in various depths to suit different objects: 20mm depth (2032 profile) for flat items and slim objects, 35mm depth (2044, 2838) for standard 3D objects, 40mm+ depth for deeper items like jerseys and memorabilia. Our deep box frames accommodate objects up to 70mm thick. Custom depths are also available.

Strand Framing supplies box frames across Ireland specifically designed for framing medals, military memorabilia, sports achievements, and collectibles. Our solid wood box frames are hand-finished and available in standard sizes or custom dimensions. We also offer dedicated medal frames with display options for ribbons and certificates.

Yes, we specialise in custom box frames made to your exact specifications. Use our online frame builder to specify the outer dimensions, depth, and moulding profile. For unusual objects or specific requirements, contact us directly - we can advise on the best frame depth and dimensions to showcase your item perfectly.

Both are deep frames, but our solid wood box frames are professionally hand-finished with superior construction. IKEA RIBBA frames are mass-produced MDF/fibreboard. Our frames have greater depth options (up to 70mm vs RIBBA's ~45mm), better durability, and come in more size options. We also make IKEA-compatible sizes in solid wood as premium alternatives.

Objects can be mounted using several methods: foam mounting pads for lightweight items, pins or wire for medals, fabric-covered backing boards for textiles, or custom inserts. For valuable or delicate items, we recommend conservation mounting methods. Contact us if you need advice on mounting specific objects or require a professional mounting service.

Box frames can be supplied with 2mm clear glass, non-reflective glass, or acrylic/Perspex glazing. For large box frames or where safety is a concern (children's rooms, public spaces), we recommend shatter-resistant acrylic. Some customers prefer no glazing for open-front shadow box displays. Specify your preference when ordering.

Our box frames are available in multiple finishes including: gloss white, matte white, gloss black, matte black, natural wood grain, oak effect, walnut, and limed (white-washed) finishes. All are solid wood with hand-finished corners. For specific colour requirements, contact us about custom finishing options.

Yes! As manufacturers, we offer significant bulk discounts on box frame orders. Volume pricing applies automatically at checkout, with better rates for larger quantities. Measure your object's width, height, and depth. For the frame size, add at least 50mm to width and height for border space (more for mounts). The frame depth should be at least 10mm greater than your object's depth to allow space behind the glass. If unsure, contact us with your object dimensions and we'll recommend the ideal frame size.
