Types of Picture Frame Glazing

We cut four types of glazing to your exact size. Select the right option based on your framing application, display environment, and budget.

Standard Float Glass (2mm)

2mm float glass is the most widely used glazing for picture and photo frames — hard, scratch-resistant, transparent, and cost-effective. The standard choice for most framing applications and all standard frame sizes. Heavier than acrylic but gives a rigid, premium finish with no distortion.

Anti-Reflective Glass

Anti-reflective glass (non-glare glass) has an etched surface that diffuses light and reduces reflections. Ideal for frames displayed under artificial lighting, near windows, or in bright rooms where standard glass would show glare. Popular for oil paintings, photographic prints, and gallery displays. The surface diffusion is imperceptible at normal viewing distance.

UV Glass & Conservation Glass

UV-protective glass filters out ultraviolet light — the primary cause of fading and discolouration in photographs and artwork over time. Essential for original artwork, limited edition prints, heirloom photographs, and documents for long-term preservation. Museum glass combines UV protection with an anti-reflective coating for gallery-quality, maximum-protection display.

Acrylic (Perspex) Cut to Size

Cast acrylic (perspex) is a lightweight, shatter-resistant alternative to glass. Half the weight of glass with high impact resistance — ideal for large frames over 50×40cm, children’s rooms, schools, commercial environments, and framed pieces that need to be posted or transported. Excellent optical clarity comparable to glass. Slightly more expensive than standard float glass.

Frequently Asked Questions — Made to Measure Picture Frame Glass Ireland

Made-to-measure picture frame glass is glazing cut to your exact specified dimensions rather than sold in standard sizes. It is used when you need a replacement pane for a broken or missing frame, when you are building a custom frame, or when your frame size does not match standard stock glass. We cut all types of picture frame glazing — float glass, anti-reflective glass, UV conservation glass, and acrylic — to any size up to our sheet maximum. Simply specify your required width and height in millimetres.

We cut the following glazing types to size: 2mm float glass (standard, suitable for most frames), anti-reflective glass (non-glare, for brightly lit rooms and galleries), UV-protective conservation glass (for valuable artwork and archival framing), museum glass (UV protection + anti-reflective coating), and cast acrylic / perspex (lightweight, shatter-resistant alternative to glass). Browse the collection above to select your glazing type and enter your required dimensions.

Anti-reflective glass (also called non-glare glass) has a treated surface that diffuses reflections, making artwork and photographs much easier to view in rooms with bright artificial lighting or windows opposite the frame. It is particularly popular for: oil paintings and original artwork in domestic settings, photographic prints in offices and hotels, and gallery and commercial displays where overhead spotlighting would cause glare with standard glass. It has a very slight diffusion effect that is imperceptible at normal viewing distance.

UV glass (UV-protective glass) filters out ultraviolet light — the primary cause of fading and discolouration in photographs, prints, and artwork over time. It is recommended for: original artwork, limited edition prints, heirloom photographs, documents, and any framed item where long-term colour preservation is important. Conservation glass typically refers to glass that meets conservation standards for archival framing. Museum glass combines UV protection with anti-reflective coating for the highest quality, gallery-grade display.

Yes — we cut cast acrylic (perspex) to size as a lightweight, shatter-resistant alternative to glass. Acrylic is approximately half the weight of glass and will not shatter, making it ideal for: large frames over 50×40cm (where glass becomes heavy and fragile), frames in children's rooms, schools, and public spaces, framed prints that need to be posted or transported, and outdoor or semi-outdoor displays. Cast acrylic offers excellent optical clarity comparable to glass. Acrylic is slightly more expensive than standard float glass but significantly cheaper than shipping a glass-glazed large frame.

Yes — replacing broken frame glass is one of the most common reasons to order made-to-measure glass. Measure the internal rebate of your frame carefully (the groove the glass sits in) and order glass cut to those dimensions. As a rule, glass is cut approximately 1–2mm smaller than the rebate on each side for easy fitting. If you are unsure of the measurement, bring the frame to our Cork workshop and we will cut a replacement pane while you wait. We can also post replacement glass cut to size for smaller frame sizes.

Yes — we deliver made-to-measure picture frame glass nationwide across Ireland and to the UK from our Cork workshop. Glass is specially packaged with foam corner protection and protective interleaving to prevent breakage in transit. Larger glass sheets are crated for added protection. For very large sheets or fragile specialist glazing, local collection or our delivery van service may be recommended — contact us to discuss delivery options for your order.

We cut picture frame glass to any size from small miniature frames up to our maximum sheet size. For standard float glass and anti-reflective glass the maximum single sheet is approximately 2400 × 1200mm. For UV and museum glass the maximum varies by product — contact us for large format requirements. There is no minimum size. All glass is cut with clean, smooth edges suitable for direct insertion into a frame rebate without further processing.
