Condensation in Picture Frames: Causes and Prevention

Water droplets or misting inside a picture frame can be worrying. However, condensation does not necessarily mean water has leaked into the frame.

It is normally caused by a combination of moisture, humidity and temperature changes.

Why Does Condensation Form?

A frame contains glass, trapped air, artwork, mountboard and backing materials. Paper-based materials naturally absorb and release moisture.

If one part of the frame becomes colder than another, this moisture can condense on the coldest surface—often the glazing.

Sudden changes make this more likely, such as moving a cool frame into strong sunlight or taking an indoor frame outside.

Cold External Walls and the 20 mm Gap

A frame pressed against a cold external wall may become considerably colder at the back.

Where this is a concern, leaving approximately 20 mm of ventilated space between the frame and wall allows warmer room air to circulate behind it.

The frame should remain approximately parallel to the wall. This can be achieved with stand-offs, spacer blocks or a suitable hanging system.


Avoid Direct Sunlight

Direct sunlight can heat different parts of a frame at different speeds. This may cause moisture held in the artwork, mountboard or backing to move and become visible as droplets.

Sunlight can also cause permanent fading and deterioration. UV-protective glazing helps, but it does not make direct sunlight completely safe.

Indoor picture frames should not be left outside unless they have been designed specifically for outdoor display.

Good Framing Helps

Vulnerable artwork should be separated from the glazing with a mount or framing spacer. This reduces the risk of the artwork touching moisture or sticking to the glass.

Conservation-quality mountboard, backing and sealing materials also help provide a more stable environment.

Drilling ventilation holes in the backing is not usually the best answer. A suitably sealed frame can slow rapid humidity changes. The useful airflow is often behind the complete frame, particularly on a cold wall.

What to Do If Condensation Appears

  • Move the frame to a stable indoor location.
  • Keep it away from direct sunlight and radiators.
  • Check the room for high humidity or dampness.
  • Allow the frame to adjust gradually—do not heat it rapidly.
  • Contact a professional framer if the condensation returns.

Simple Prevention Checklist

  • Keep framed artwork indoors.
  • Avoid direct sunlight and strong heat.
  • Avoid damp or excessively humid rooms.
  • Keep the artwork away from the glazing.
  • Use appropriate conservation materials.
  • Seal the edges of the backing board with suitable conservation framing tape. Apply the tape continuously around the back, covering the joint between the backing board and frame to reduce rapid exchanges of humid air.
  • Allow approximately 20 mm behind frames on cold walls.
  • Investigate recurring condensation promptly.

A well-made frame provides valuable protection, but it cannot completely isolate artwork from its surroundings. The best results come from combining good framing with a stable indoor environment.
